Gypsy Rose Warns Mackenzie Shirilla: Remorse Is Coming—& It’ll Destroy You

Gypsy Rose Blanchard says Mackenzie Shirilla has a lot of maturing to do behind bars before she feels remorse for the fatal car crash that killed her boyfriend and a friend, and when that day comes, it’s going to hit her like a freight train. And here’s the thing that makes it hit different: Gypsy isn’t playing therapist—she’s speaking from a cell she already served time in. After serving about 8.5 years, she was released on parole on December 28, 2023. She knows the weight.
On the TMZ Podcast, Gypsy sat down with Charlie Neff on “The TMZ Podcast” and talked straight about what she saw in Netflix’s The Crash—the documentary that dropped May 15 and thrust this case back into overdrive. Based on what she’s seen in the Netflix doc, “The Crash,” Gypsy thinks Mackenzie is NOT remorseful in the slightest and it’s going to take a lot of reflection, hard work, and growing up. Translation: Mackenzie’s performance for the cameras ain’t matching her prison life.
Mackenzie Shirilla is currently serving two 15-year sentences after being convicted of murdering her boyfriend Dominic Russo and his friend Davion Flanagan, after driving her car into a wall at 100 mph. The incident happened in the early hours of July 31, 2022 in Strongsville, Ohio. At Mackenzie’s trial in 2023, prosecutors presented evidence showing she had a toxic relationship with Dominic and had previously threatened to crash her car with him in it to deliberately end the relationship.
But here’s where it gets real messy: The 21-year-old is currently serving two concurrent 15-to-life terms at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville, Ohio, and will be eligible for parole in September 2037. That’s a long runway. And Gypsy says remorse will actually be a key to Mackenzie’s potential freedom, as she has to get to that point if she ever wants to get out on parole.
While Gypsy’s preaching accountability, the Russo family is working on something bigger. Christine Russo is currently campaigning for ‘Dom’s Law’ to be implemented, which means that once Shirilla is released, she won’t be able to cash in on her notoriety. The motive is clear: “She’s gonna be an influencer and write a book when she gets out about everything that happened,” a former inmate said Shirilla told her. After her release, the killer got her own reality TV show Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up, and has become a social media celebrity with more than nine million followers on TikTok. That’s the ghost they’re trying to stop from haunting Mackenzie’s future.
The 16BARS take: Gypsy Rose went from killing her mother to becoming a TikTok influencer—and now she’s literally the blueprint the Russo family is trying to prevent. Mackenzie sitting in prison booking pen pals and planning her influencer empire isn’t remorse; it’s just waiting. When the weight actually hits, it’ll be too late to take back what she did.
