Jay-Z headlined the Roots Picnic on Saturday, May 30 in Philadelphia, and he came to settle accounts. During the freestyle, Jay-Z said, “That chatty patty is down on his luck again,” which appeared to be a reference to Dash’s frequent interviews for various YouTube channels and podcasts where he talks about his disdain for Jay-Z. Then he went harder: “N****s teeth is tumbling out their mouth, and somehow I’m the one who done it,” referencing a viral video of Dash talking. Plus a third bar: “You gotta have a billy to even talk to me.” Three separate shots at the same man in one freestyle. That’s not subliminal—that’s a full sermon.
Roc-A-Fella Records was founded in 1994 by Dame Dash, Jay-Z, and Kareem Burke, creating a platform that turned into a record label that helped shape the course of hip hop and defined an era. But in 2004, Jay signed a deal to become the president of Def Jam, which owned a large enough share of Roc-A-Fella that it essentially put Jay in charge of both labels.
