A 19-year-old from Henrico, Virginia is now facing serious federal charges after a pre-dawn shooting outside Virginia State University’s dormitories Saturday that left five people wounded — one critically — just hours after the university celebrated new student arrivals with motivational remarks from former NFL star Cam Newton.
Camron Harris, 19, was arrested in connection with the shooting early Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026 outside the Virginia State University dormitories. Harris was found in a closet in Seward Hall at about 4 p.m. — more than 12 hours after the shooting was reported. According to authorities, Harris is not a student on campus nor were four of the people injured, with victims ranging from 17 to 23 years old. One of the injured, a 20-year-old, is a student and has been released from the hospital.
The violence erupted early Saturday at the Quad Annexes near campus residence halls around 1:30 a.m., according to police. Five people were wounded, including one with critical injuries.
